The Problem Solving Mindset

Having a problem solving mindset is the first step to effectively solving problems. It ensures that problems are resolved and not just altered. This mindset is characterized by the following:

  • Responsibility: Take care of problems in a timely manner instead of postponing them. Avoiding them only results in bigger problems to deal with down the road.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Be aware of your emotions when problems arise. Establishing composure before responding will ensure actions and decisions are not based on emotions, but rather, the facts of the situation.
  • Goal Identification: Decide the end-goal of the problem solving process. Having a clear vision of what that looks like creates a clearer understanding and strategy to solving the problem at its core.
  • Descriptive & Objective Detail: Describe problems objectively and without blame or assumptions. Providing objective details about a problem prevents it from being met with a hostile or defensive response. Instead, it encourages positive engagement.
  • Active Listening: Genuinely listen with interest when others are speaking. Active listening communicates to a speaker that their opinion is valued, thereby encouraging them to be more engaged in solving the problem.
  • Probe & Reflect: Don’t assume you understand but try to ensure understanding. Asking pointed questions and sharing reflections eliminates the risk of having solutions based on miscommunication.
  • Desire the Most Appropriate Solution: Don’t merely go with the first solution that comes to mind. Collaboratively come up with several solutions and then select the one that is most appropriate.
Reason for Developing Problem Solving Capabilities

There are many reasons problem solving is an important skill to have.

  • Without properly identifying the problem or its solution, businesses can waste valuable time and money addressing the wrong issues.
  • The world of business and retail is constantly evolving; meaning, problems are always arising. Being able to quickly identify and address them gives businesses a competitive advantage.
  • Problem solving is a critical transferable skill to be successful in any role within the company and beyond.
