Communication Pitfalls

It’s important to know what good, influential communication looks like. Keep in mind the following common pitfalls to communication that you can avoid.

  • Being rushed: Gives people the impression that you’re unprepared.
  • Being late: Gives people the impression you don’t respect them or their time.
  • Bringing up issues without potential solutions: Displays a lack of thought leadership and forward thinking.
  • Overly relying on formal meetings and updates: Prevents stronger partnerships, as communication is always happening. Both formal and nonformal communication can build credibility and strengthen relationships.
  • Not asking for help: Prevents value-adding collaboration, denying others the opportunity to learn where there are issues and how they might be able to help.
