Our Culture

"At Walmart, if you face a serious business problem, on your mind, you should bring it up on a Friday or Saturday morning session. Through this, we can all try to solve it together. Also, we would like to have a good time while doing all this work; it’s the “whistle while you work” kind of philosophy – we have a good time and also work better because of it!"

Our culture is VALUES in action

New to Walmart & wondering how to remember this? It’s easy -

R - Respect

I - Integrity

S - Service

E - Excellence

They guide our business and culture in the right direction and frame how each of us make thoughtful contributions to the business every day!

Culture – Values Decoded
Walmart Ways of Working

Sam Walton showed us the way by giving us a clear purpose and four timeless values. At Walmart, we save people money and help them live better — we do this by serving others, striving for excellence, respecting everyone and acting with integrity.

You know what else is constant at Walmart? Change. As I visit our associates all over the world and ask, “Other than our purpose and values, the only thing that’s constant at Walmart is?”, they respond – “Change!” It’s a powerful mindset, and our people have it.

We are changing how we work and what we do, without changing our purpose and our values.

Me as a Walmart Brand Ambassador

It’s no secret - we want you to love where you work. Part of that is making sure our working environment feels safe and everyone’s ideas are respected.

That means we all have a part to play in ensuring we listen to others, remain vigilant and that associates from different backgrounds or identities don’t feel uncomfortable by what we do or say. Take a look at the information below for a few reminders on how to do that.

Foster Inclusivity

Because everyone is happier when they’re bringing their whole selves to work

Demonstrate Respect

Create an environment that nurtures trust and respect for everyone

Act Courteously

Don’t talk over others and give credit where credit is due

Recognize Inappropriate Comments

You don’t have to tolerate inappropriate behavior. Ask the person to stop, or better yet, report it to Ethics

How do we live by our values at IDC

Technology is what empowers us as we continue to help millions of customers save money and live better. Our Walmart values are the foundation of everything we do, and the culture is our values in action – it is our competitive advantage and helps us drive performance, particularly in times of change. This is an exciting time to be at Walmart, which is why I believe that as we move with speed into the future of work and omnichannel retail, our values should remain our compass.

Our beginnings – a historical peek

In 1950, the Walton family moved to Bentonville, northwest Arkansas; from the eastern side of the state.

After moving, Sam opened up his second store and also the first to bear the Walton name. It was a Ben Franklin five-and-dime franchise located next door to a barber shop – a space that Sam acquired in 1951. He followed this expansion into the space next door with a remodeling sale that established Walton’s 5&10 as the huge success Sam knew it could be! Take a virtual tour of the store which has been converted into a museum now – truly a great symbol of Sam’s legacy!

Peek into Shareholders Meetings

The place where people get a chance to see the Walmart chemistry in action is our annual shareholders meeting. The event gives most people insight into the WM corporate culture.

It began as an attempt to do something different for the analysts, taking them on float trips and making them camp out - but since then it’s grown into what is probably the world’s largest corporate annual meeting. We make presentations for the shareholders that focus on our accomplishments over the past year and on our plan for the coming year. But what really sets the meeting apart is the degree to which we involve our associates, who are some of our most important shareholders!
