Although the number of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields has grown steadily, they’re still woefully underrepresented—and that’s even more true for women of color. So Atlanta-based community leader Dr. Maxine Cain created STEM Atlanta Women to change that.
The non-profit seeks to “enlighten, educate and empower women and girls to take advantage of the global opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and to acquire the skills needed to compete and succeed in the 21st century and beyond.” It offers master classes, hack-a-thons, conferences, entrepreneurial training and several other programs to increase the number of women, particularly women of color, who go into STEM fields. As Dr. Cain says, “If you give them the opportunity to utilize their creativity and imagination, you’ll be surprised what our young people can do.”
In this interview with Emmy Award-winning producer Rushion McDonald, Dr. Cain reveals how she created a welcoming environment where young women from underserved communities can “relax and feel good” as they learn new skills.
