Walmart Business Stories: Donna Street
Learn how the Las Vegas-area community center is creating a safe learning environment for high-risk youth
When Robert Strawder was growing up on Donna Street in North Las Vegas, he didn’t have a safe space to hang out. There were no community centers in his neighborhood, and the nearest Boys and Girls Club was a 20- to-30-minute walk away—“but something might happen when I'm walking there,” he told local news agency KTNV.
Decades later, Strawder is giving the kids of Donna Street a hangout spot of their own. “I wanted to build a recreation center here for our community here in North Las Vegas,” Strawder told Walmart Business. Sponsored by local organizations like the NHL team the Vegas Golden Knights and NFL team the Las Vegas Raiders, the Donna Street Community Center opened its doors in early 2024 with a mission: “To strengthen lives and communities by providing a social-emotional, social science, humanities and performing arts-based learning program, within a safe environment, for high-risk youth, unlocking the creative potential and dreams to shift the trajectory of their lives in a highly impactful way.”
Strawder, who runs Donna Street with his son MarQuez Eagles, envisions the community center as a “high-tech Boys and Girls Club.” In addition to supplying couches, desks, copiers, paper and other typical supplies, Donna Street has a podcast lab, a computer lab, video games and VR equipment. “Kids can study, do their homework; parents can come out here and fill out applications,” Strawder explained.
According to Strawder, about 90% of this equipment came from Walmart Business. He also relies on deliveries from Walmart Business’s grocery to help keep the kids fed. As Eagles explained, he and his father “wanted to provide food for the kids because a lot of these kids don’t have any food in the refrigerator.” Before partnering with Walmart Business, Strawder “would have to call 20 different places to get what I needed to get,” but now he and the rest of the Donna Street team can find what they need in a single online storefront.
To help the Donna Street Community Center continue making an impact on local youth, we gave Robert and MarQuez a six-month Walmart Business+ membership. With it, they’ll get free shipping with no minimum,1 as well as free delivery from local Walmart stores on orders over $35.2 They can also earn 2% cash back rewards on orders more than $250.3 Overall, the subscription could save them more than $500 per year.4 If you want to enjoy the same benefits, then check out the Walmart Business+ membership and start saving today.
