Make the Most of Your Tax-Exempt Status With Walmart Business
Organizations can save in-store & online
Nonprofits can save a lot by making the most of their tax-exempt status. Tax exemption laws vary from state to state, but schools and universities, government agencies, religious institutions, charities and other nonprofit organizations can often purchase the everyday supplies they need without having to pay sales tax.
Registering for tax-exemption at Walmart Business is an excellent way for qualified organizations to stay fully stocked while minimizing sales tax. The application process is simple and straightforward, and once approved, your whole organization will be able to purchase tax-exempt goods with Walmart Pay in the Walmart Business app.
What is a tax-exempt business?
A wide variety of institutions qualify for tax-exempt status, from public schools and government bodies, to houses of worship and local charities. The IRS has a more comprehensive list, but be aware that the exact benefits and requirements vary from state to state. Multiple certificates may be required to get tax-exemption in specific states. Please refer to your state’s laws and regulations for more detail.
If you buy supplies for your nonprofit at a brick-and-mortar store, you may have to claim a tax exemption by filling out a specialized form each time you check out. Walmart Business makes it easy to apply your tax-exempt status both online and in-store with Walmart Pay in the Walmart Business app.
By registering your qualifying account for tax-exemption with Walmart Business, you—or anyone else with account access—can purchase tax-free goods without having to input your tax-exemption details at checkout every time. This saves time, money and hassle.
How to apply for tax-exempt status with Walmart Business
The Walmart Tax-Exemption Program (WTEP) makes it simple for eligible organizations to shop without paying sales tax. Online, multiple users can share a single tax-exempt account, and our checkout process will allow you to remove sales tax on eligible items. In-store, buyers can use Walmart Pay in the Walmart Business app at checkout to avoid complicated, repetitive paperwork. Multiple users in the same tax-exempt account can also use this method to shop in-store.
Our guide can walk you through the process of creating an account, which requires your first and last name, as well as a business email and a password. Add your organization information to finish the registration process.
Once you have finished creating an account, click “Enroll today,” or access through your account page. It will be helpful to have your organization and tax-exempt certifications handy for the application. You’ll need to input the type of organization you work for, the state where you do business and a digital copy of your company’s tax exemption certificate or license. Walmart will then review your application and, if approved apply your tax-exempt status to your account.
Walmart also provides step-by-step instructions and an FAQ in case you run into any trouble.
What to do if you’re already tax-exempt on Walmart.com
If your tax-exempt organization has already bought goods on Walmart.com, then you may not have to apply for tax-exempt status again. When you sign up for Walmart Business, simply use the same email address as your standard Walmart.com account. Your tax-exempt status will transfer over. If you use a new email address instead, you’ll have to reapply and submit your documentation again.
Be aware that if you’ve only ever bought tax-exempt goods in a physical Walmart store, you’ll need to create a Walmart Business account and apply for tax-exempt to enjoy the same benefits online. At present, there’s no way to transfer store credentials to online shopping.
Shopping tax-exempt at Walmart
Once you’ve applied for a Walmart tax-exempt program account through Walmart Business, there are two ways you can use it. The first is by shopping online.
