Assessment of Current State & Gaps

The second phase, Assess, requires you to partner with leadership to collect data, which includes historical financial reports, performance, historical goals and objectives, surveys, and interviews. Once the information is gathered, analyzed and interpreted, you may be able to compare historical data with the current to determine critical changes.

Understanding the gaps between the current and future state of the organization’s capabilities will help you focus decisions based on critical changes. Click on each step to learn more.

Assess Current Organizational Structure

A. Review existing databases and external data (payroll system, HRIS database, recruitment database and perormance management systems, surveys, SME interviews, focus groups) for relevant business units or functions (job descriptions, roles and responsibilities, and grade structures).

B. Analyze data and confirm accuracy of information and existing organization structure with senior leadership.

Identify and Prioritize Critical Gaps

A. Evaluate the root cause issues for change or critical gaps (gaps directly or indirectly related to the 4-5 most critical capabilities) by comparing existing structure of processes, structures, and talent capabilities against the business strategy.

B. Prioritize which gaps are having the most impact on perormance and achieving the strategy and which of the gaps are being addressed by ongoing effors.

C. Create a repor highlighting strengths, gaps, weaknesses and threats, and seek feedback from key stakeholders to validate and finalize the gaps addressed.

Determine Potential Restructuring Solutions

A. Focusing on the prioritized critical gaps, determine which design elements must be modified to close gaps.

B. Identify each of the organizational elements to be included in the redesign initiative.

C. Develop a clear map of process inefficiencies and activities to consider restructuring.

Develop the Opportunity Statement

A. Review your assessment repor for root cause issue and prioritized critical gaps.

B. Define necessary characteristics of the future state.

C. Ariculate the opporunity to be considered.

D. Revisit with key leadership to re-confirm scope.
