How to Access Educational Time Off (ETO)

NOTE: The ETO request is only available from a Walmart computer. You must be on the Walmart network in order to apply.
General Information

ETO is available for students who need time off of work for educational activities but who aren't eligible for a personal Leave of Absence (LOA). These associates no longer have to be terminated and rehired at a later date. Instances when ETO can be used include (but are not limited to):

    • Leaving to go to school in another town
    • Going home during breaks and working in the store during the school year
    • Needing extended time off due to sports or other school activities
    • Being unable to work during the school year

The process is managed at store level by inactivating and activating the associate in SMART, and there is no limit to the number of times associates can be inactivated and activated. ETO is NOT a job protected leave.

NOTE: Personal LOAs for Education are available to associates who have been employed for at least 12 months and have worked 1250 hours over the past year. These LOAs are administered through Sedgwick.

Eligibility Requirements
  • No active coaching
  • No more than half of the occurrences allowed by the store's attendance policy
    • Two occurrences for associates employed less than six months
    • Four and a half occurrences for associates employed at least six months
  • Must be enrolled in school and show proof, such as:
    • Student ID
    • Current school schedule
    • Active school email account
    • Letter from school
  • Time off must be for an extended period of time (3 weeks or more)
Steps To Apply
  1. Make sure you are on a Walmart computer.
  2. Sign into WalmartOne (click the Sign In button in the top right corner of this page).
  3. Once you are signed in, click the ETO button at the bottom of this page.
  4. If you are prompted again, re-enter your WalmartOne login ID and password.
  5. If you get a blank page, close that tab, come back to this page and click the ETO button again.
  6. Complete the form and click submit.
  7. Your Facility Manager will review and approve/deny your request.
  8. Personnel Coordinator will update you of your request’s status.
  9. When you are ready to return to work, call your store.
