Operational Tech: What is it and why should I care?

April 12, 2025 | 11:40 a.m. | 45 min

Information Technology (IT) has revolutionized our world.

Email, streaming video, groceries to your porch, getting a taxi from your phone. These are all awesome.

What about clean water? Electricity? Food production?

Operational Technology (OT) is critical to these society-enabling staples.

OT is a counter-discipline to Information Technology (IT) that controls systems in industrial settings. This typically involves exerting control over components that operate in physical space.

Many IT experts are not aware that OT exists and do not understand the security posture of these systems or how they differ from IT environments.

OT and IT are not the same, but they do run on parallel tracks.

As the threat landscape is massively expanding against OT systems, we want to shed some light on inherent risks and the ways in which OT and IT can work together and keep the arguments centered around important topics like music and food.
