Associates’ Dedicated Service Leads to Better Care for the Community

Through the good deeds of associates at Store 1543, Good Shepherd Clinic in Spearfish, S.D., received $6,000 from the Walmart Foundation last year—$4,000 of which came from Volunteerism Always Pays (VAP) contributions.

Store associates frequently volunteer at Good Shepherd Clinic, which provides services to bring affordable health care to the community.

“The VAP contributions from Walmart go directly toward prescriptions and expanding immunizations, dental, and vision,” says Kim W., a market assistant at Store 1543 who leads the clinic’s records team. “Without that, the clinic wouldn’t be able to offer those services. It makes a big difference.”

Associates volunteer in a variety of ways. Alma B., fitting room associate, helps the clinic’s hospitality team, serving homemade meals to patients. “Alma answers the phone at Store 1543, so it’s funny to hear patients at the clinic say, ‘You sound familiar—have I talked to you before?’ ” says Kim.

Meanwhile, Deli Department Manager Dana H. crochets hundreds of hats, scarves, and blankets for the clinic. Kim says they bring joy to patients, especially on snowy South Dakota nights.

“Our associates volunteer because they see a need for health care in their own families and among people they know,” says Kim. “It makes them better associates because they get to see the benefit of working for the good of the community.”
