Time Off and Leave of Absence (LOA)

Time off

How much time off do I have?

It’s easy to request time off. Just check your available balance with the Global Time and Attendance (GTA) Portal on the WIRE, submit a request for time off and get it approved by your manager.

If you take last-minute PTO for a sick day, vacation or other personal reasons, submit your request as soon as possible. Keep in mind that your facility’s attendance policy may apply. Be sure to follow the proper process for reporting unplanned absences. Unplanned absences will be subject to your facility’s specific attendance policy.

What if I don't use all my paid time off?

The freedom to take off when you need it can be a very valuable associate benefit. We get it. That’s why Walmart’s all-in-one approach to Paid Time Off (PTO) gives you a simple, flexible way to spend time away from work. Whether you’re going to the doctor, celebrating a holiday or just taking a family vacation, PTO makes it easy to schedule the time you need.

The longer you work for Walmart, the more PTO you can earn.

As an hourly associate, you earn time based on your service hours and how long you’ve been with Walmart. You’ll be able to use PTO as you earn it, each pay period.

PTO Earning Rate: Full-Time Hourly Associate

0-1 17.33 hours = 1 PTO hour earned 120
2 17.33 hours = 1 PTO hour earned 136
3-5 17.33 hours = 1 PTO hour earned 176
6-9 17.33 hours = 1 PTO hour earned 208
10-14 17.33 hours = 1 PTO hour earned 224
15-19 7.88 hours = 1 PTO hour earned 264
20+ 6.84 hours = 1 PTO hour earned 304
If I don’t use all my paid time off, can I get it paid out?

If I don’t use all my paid time off, can I get it paid out? As an hourly associate, if you have unused PTO at the end of the plan year, that PTO turns into cash on your first check in February!

So…how does it work?

Your PTO plan year runs from Feb. 1 - Jan. 31.

  • Full-time hourly associate: you can carry over up to 80 hours of unused PTO
  • Part-time hourly associate: you can carry over up to 48 hours.

The fine print:

If I leave Walmart, will I get paid out for my unused PTO?

If you leave Walmart and have been an associate for one year or more, you will be paid out the PTO balance for your account on your termination date. Policies and rules in some states and cities may affect how PTO is paid out. Please see the PTO Policy on the WIRE or talk to your personnel associate for more details.

How do I make a change to an approved PTO request?

On the Current Requests screen you will find the option to Edit pending time off requests. If a request has already been approved by a manager, you will need to cancel the request and submit a new request with your adjustments.

Do I earn PTO while I’m on PTO?

Yes! You earn PTO even while you’re on PTO! All of the following types of service hours count toward earning PTO, including:

  • Regular hours worked and overtime hours
  • Disaster pay
  • Bereavement (up to 3 days)
  • Jury duty
  • Enhanced military leave hours
  • Reporting pay
  • PTO taken to replace work hours
Can I take just a little bit of PTO at a time?

The PTO program is based on flexibility so you can request time off in as little as 15 minute increments. You can use PTO if circumstances require you to start work late or leave early, and still get paid for your time. Please remember, the attendance policy for your facility still applies.
