ZP Challenge Benefits Associate and His Customers

Do you ZP? See how the challenge helped Donald be his best for his family, his customers, and himself.

A quick tap on his belly changed Donald G.’s life.

He was at his annual physical. His doctor warned Donald—front end coach at Store 2027 in LaVale, Md.—about high blood pressure and dangerous cholesterol levels, and then tapped his belly and said, “You might want to work on this.” That tap lit a fire in Donald: “I told myself, ‘He’s not going to be able to do that again.’ I knew it was time to make a change.”

A year later, Donald was 43 pounds lighter. “When I look at myself in the mirror these days, I’m smiling,” he says. “I can see how far I’ve come, and it gives me a real sense of pride.”

Donald’s weight-loss journey began with dusting off the exercise bike sitting in his bedroom. He started riding 20 miles a day and lost three pounds the first week.

He then decided to check into the ZP Challenge—a program where associates can win prizes for making healthy choices—to see how it could help him meet his weight-loss goals.

“I love to share my story, but I also tell people, to truly make a change, it’s all about you.”

 

Donald’s tips for getting the most out of the ZP Challenge:

Don’t limit your focus. You can pick one or more challenge types: Food, Fit, Family, or Money. Even if you pick just one, your actions will affect others.

Do what works for you. The ZP Challenge lets you modify your diet to what you enjoy. For example, Donald cut back on ice cream but didn’t totally cut it out.

Take advantage of the accountability. “No one’s looking over your shoulder, but when you hit that button, you’re making a choice,” Donald says.

“I downloaded the ZP app and started my first 21-day program with a focus on the fitness aspect,” Donald says. “It’s really easy to use: You just go on the app and check the box every time you make a smart choice. For me, I would check the box if I went on a walk with my wife or running with my son. I wasn’t just coming home from work and sitting on the couch anymore.”

Donald also made changes to his diet. He switched out sweet tea for water; gave up his regular bagel, egg, and cheese for a lighter breakfast sandwich with fruit and yogurt; and cut back on junk food.

At the end of 21 days, Donald shared his ZP Challenge story. “That’s when I had my real aha! moment,” he says. “I couldn’t tell a lot of difference day to day, but seeing those before and after pictures side by side—I could finally visualize the transformation.”

“After more than a year with ZP, I can tell a big difference,” he says. “I’m not bloated and tired all the time. I have more energy and can run around our 210,000-square-foot store without feeling winded.”

Donald has always put customers first, but with his newfound energy he can spend even more time delivering great service. He’s even become an inspiration. “People say they saw the changes I was making, and they’ll ask me how to eat better or what I do for exercise. I always love to share my story, but I also tell people, to truly make a change, it’s all about you.”
