Find Out How This Associates Recruits Difference Making Talent

A #RetailForward business needs the right people. Find out how Nina, a recruiter, is innovating in the way she discovers talent.

What’s it take to revolutionize the way Walmart finds talent?

That’s the challenge that drives Nina P., senior manager, Talent Operations, Walmart eCommerce in Hoboken, N.J. To find the right people for the eCommerce Field Supply Chain team, her approach to recruiting goes beyond traditional means like career fairs. Then, once an intern or new hire is aboard, she considers what can be done to keep them at Walmart and help them build a lasting career. Here’s how.

  • Diversify the Recruiting Calendar and Activities

Nina extends Walmart’s presence beyond a table at the annual career fair and develops strong partnerships with universities to regularly engage students. For example: hosting a tailgate party, organizing an event like Fulfillment Olympics, or merging wellness activities with Walmart brand awareness.
  • Identify Where Leaders Gather

“Diversity of thought is how we remain innovative and competitive,” Nina says. So she works to diversify the supply chain team in multiple ways. Even zoology or biology majors can be recruited.
She also attends events like women’s leadership conferences. “We make sure that we do everything we can to find the places where the strong leaders are going.”
"You don’t have to continue to do what you’re doing today. You can pivot your entire career and do something different. We need to make sure people know that and continue to challenge them to do that."
  • Create Rotational Programs

Working with industry and business leaders helps Nina give new hires a multifaceted view of the business.
“We’re constantly making sure that we are looking at the leaders we have in place and how we intentionally do internal growth,” she says. “Sometimes it’s linear. Sometimes it’s a zigzag. Sometimes it’s lateral.”
  • Customize the Path

Nina offers curated experiences that lead to longevity and retention. Partnerships with other teams and business leaders help guide and groom a career.

Retention and Development

The days of just hiring a person in one area and having them work there for years are over, Nina explains. A retention strategy must include pathways to advancement and growth.

Lori C., regional HR director for Walmart.com, who works with Nina, explains why attracting diversity of thought is so important.

Diversity of thought prepares us for our future. It allows us to create an internal pipeline and allows young and experienced professionals to build careers while building new locations.

“A trusted, diverse, and inclusive environment allows us to jump ahead in the race and gives an advantage point because we see things from every angle. We provide solutions to the customer that are faster and more efficient because we hired to drive strategy.

“One area of focus is to be the leader and employer of choice for women in supply chain. To be that leader, we must be an inclusive environment, challenge everyday ‘norms,’ and focus on a new normal. We don’t pretend biases don’t exist but rather challenge our leaders to no longer let them.
