A Little Goes a Long Way This MLK Day

Editor's Note: Together, our associates and customers inspired us, helping to raise more than $6.5 million through the MLK Day of Giving. Thank you for your generosity in making the day so successful.

We believe our associates and customers care deeply about supporting nonprofits that address causes of all kinds. This year, in honor of MLK Day, we want to make it easy for anyone to give back and help meet the needs of others.

Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s lifelong commitment to servant leadership, Walmart is hosting a one-day, online MLK Day of Giving matching campaign for U.S. Walmart, Sam’s Club and brand family associates as well as any consumer on Jan. 18 from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. EST.

Walmart will match $3 for every $1 donated by associates through Walmart.com/DayofGiving, up to $2 million, and subject to a $10,000 donation limit per associate. This means that only the first $10,000 donated by an associate is eligible for the Walmart match, up to the $2 million campaign limit, until the match is met. Walmart is also matching $2 for every $1 donated by consumers, up to $2 million, subject to a $5,000 donation limit per consumer, for a total of up to $4 million contributed to the Walmart Spark Fund for Charities at the Charities Aid Foundation of America.

To participate, donors can select any qualified U.S.-based 501c(3) nonprofit organization found in the MLK Day Of Giving portal on Walmart.com/DayofGiving.

Giving back is part of our culture, and has been since the very beginning. As with all donation programs, participation is strictly voluntary and in no way impacts the terms or conditions of your employment with the company.

How does the campaign work?

  • No purchase necessary to participate.

  • Donations are being made to the Walmart Spark Fund for Charities at Charities Aid Foundation America (CAFA), a donor advised fund. This means that donating associates and customers make a recommendation to CAFA to contribute their funds to a selected nonprofit.

  • Select any qualified U.S.-based 501c(3) nonprofit organization found in the MLK Day Of Giving portal.

  • Associates and customers may give a one-time credit or debit card donation to the Walmart Spark Fund for Charities at Charities Aid Foundation America through Walmart.com/DayofGiving.

  • The donation link will open to associates and customers on Jan. 18 at 12:01 A.M. EST and will conclude 11:59 P.M. EST.

  • CAFA is not required to donate the funds to the nonprofit recommended and may refuse to transfer funds for a number of reasons including: the nonprofit has lost its tax-exempt status, the nonprofit is listed on a government or other risk watch list, or the nonprofit will not accept the funds.

  • If CAFA cannot honor your recommendation, you will be provided with an email notification and the opportunity to make a subsequent recommendation within 10 business days of the email notification’s date.

At Walmart, we’re always working to help people live better. We thank our associates and customers for joining us in that pursuit. Together, we can drive positive change.
