New Training and Job Descriptions in Fresh

Fresh is a critical piece of our business and our future success. With more than 90 percent of our members buying fresh from us, we’re continuing to make investments in our Fresh associates in ways that will help us provide the best service for our members.

To further develop the skills of our associates so they can serve our members even better, we’re introducing a new comprehensive, hands-on Fresh training program. We’ve also updated the job descriptions for Fresh Leads.

Key Training Details

  • All associates who are Club Managers, Fresh Assistant Managers, Fresh Team Leads, or are in a certain specialized roles (Meat Cutter, Baker, Prepared Food Associate and Cake Decorator), will go to an off-site with their teammates for a multi-day group training experience.
  • It will be intensive and hands-on. They’ll learn new skills and build their knowledge of Fresh.
  • Training will consist of two phases - Phase 1 will provide associates with the basics and foundations of working in a Fresh area. Phase 2 will further educate associates on their area of specialty.
  • This replaces the current Fresh Certification program. We’ll run a refresher training every year so you can keep up to speed. There will also be ongoing quarterly training for associates who are new to role and/or top talent.
  • Our third-party training support, Vine, will continue to support in the Fresh areas of our club to teach operational basics and train associates on the Sam’s Club Fresh model.
  • You’ll receive more information on specific days/times the training will occur from your Market Manager in the coming weeks.

Job Descriptions

There will be new job descriptions - including titles, essential functions, and minimum qualifications - for Lead positions in Fresh to more clearly state the expectations of the position and entice candidates (both internally and externally) to build their career at Sam’s Club in Fresh. The job descriptions will be added to this toolkit soon, but below is a snap-shot of the positions. The expectations of all Fresh positions at Sam’s Club will revolve around the following essential functions:

  • Food Safety Certification

  • 1 year experience in bakery production, including decorating

Meat Department Lead

  • 6 months experience working in a meat fresh production department or 6 months experience supervising a team
  • Food Safety Certification
  • 1 year's supervisory experience
  • 1 years’ experience in meat processing including boneless and bone-in products

Produce Department Lead

  • 6 months experience working in a fresh production department or 6 months experience supervising a team
  • Food Safety Certification

Prepared Foods and Café Lead

  • 6 months experience working in a fresh production department or 6 months experience supervising a team.
  • Food Safety Certification
  • 1 years’ experience supervising a team
