Darren puts in the miles to mark his retirement

Some people might see retirement as an opportunity to take it easy but not Darren Evans at our Brighton Marina Store who retires today after a phenomenal 37 years with us.

To mark the milestone, GSM Darren took on the amazing personal challenge of cycling and running between all the stores that he has been a GSM at over the years – in just one day! The stores are Crawley, St Leonards on Sea, Eastbourne, Brighton Hollingbury and Brighton Marina clocking up a staggering 106 miles! Darren took on the challenge to raise money for the We Only Live Once Charity and awareness of sport in mind – check out his story here.

Darren joined us in 1983 as a Butcher’s trainee before becoming a Butcher Manager. Since then he has worked in various areas of stores across London and Sussex.

He’s certainly made an impact on the colleagues he’s worked with. People Business Partner for the South Coast Sarah Withill said: “We are all so proud of what Darren has achieved, not only recognising his fantastic service but also this incredible challenge that he’s finishing with – he is a total inspiration!”

Speaking about the challenge and his time at Asda, Darren said: “I’m so overwhelmed by the support of colleagues both past and present that helped him through this incredible challenge. It’s the colleagues that I’m going to really miss!”

Darren plans to spend his retirement with his wife Jane, four children Natalie, Shannon, Ashley and Alfie and his grandchild Tara, as well as travelling and experiencing new adventures. Of course he will also be keeping up the running and cycling!

Congratulations on completing the challenge Darren and happy retirement – thank you for everything you have done.
