A huge well done to Azhar Allahdad the Pharmacy manager at our Middlesbrough store who has been nominated in the Retail, Hospitality and Tourism category of national BAME Apprenticeship awards!
The awards were set up in 2016 as a way of inspiring excellence and sharing best practise, as well as creating more opportunities for those involved; research has shown that people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds are less likely to enrol in apprenticeships and those that do often have no positive role models to inspire them on their development journey.
Azhar started his apprenticeship journey back in 2017 when he enrolled in the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship for Retail Business Professionals and says:
“I initially found out about the degree apprenticeship programme through our apprenticeship communication in-store and talking to other colleagues and at the time of applying my GSM decided to nominate me to undertake the programme. I decided to apply as I wanted to expand my skills and knowledge on a personal level and I also wanted to improve and develop as a manager to better support my team as well as the business.
“The degree apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to continue in my role at Asda, as well as obtaining a degree qualification, and a whole host of other skills that would be useful for my future professional development.
“When discussing this fantastic opportunity with my family and colleagues, I was initially apprehensive of what they would think about me entering higher education, but I found everyone to be really supportive and happy for the opportunity that I had been given.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed being on the degree apprenticeships programme and whilst I have been studying and working, I also became a father of two children, and have had to quickly learn how to balance home, work and professional life. This has been quite challenging at times, especially when you throw into the mix working in a pharmacy during a global pandemic, but I think it has been an excellent decision for myself.”
The awards finals are in September and we all wish Azhar the very best of luck!
